About

On the second Sunday of October, Tanzan Shrine on Mt. Tonomine holds the Kakitsu Festival, a rite going back to the Muromachi period. Its centerpiece is the hyakumi no onjiki, "a hundred flavors of sacred food," an offering made from Tonomine's autumn harvest. The name comes from an era name. In 1438 a large shogunate army attacked Tonomine and the mountain's buildings burned, but the shrine's sacred object had been taken to Tachibana-dera in Asuka for safety. When it came home 3 years later, in the first year of Kakitsu (1441), the people of the mountain celebrated with harvest offerings and made that day their festival. It is a Nara Prefecture intangible folk cultural property.
