About

From August 13 to 15, bon dances are held in 10 districts of Totsukawa Village, and among them the Odori ("great dance") stands out for keeping its old form intact. Under paper lanterns, villagers and visitors from outside come together, making it an important summer gathering. It descends from furyu dancing popular in Kyoto in the Muromachi period, which made its way to Totsukawa and was preserved by villagers alongside their customs. It was once danced across the village, but few districts still keep it, and the Odori of Musashi, Ohara and Nishikawa are Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan.
