About
Each spring Takada Castle Site Park in Joetsu hosts its cherry blossom festival, and Takada's evening blossoms rank among Japan's three most famous night cherry views. The park occupies the grounds of Takada Castle, home of Matsudaira Tadateru, the sixth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and about 4,000 cherry trees bloom around its broad inner and outer moats. After sunset, paper lanterns light the blossoms along with the three-tiered turret, the scene most people come for. Illumination runs from evening into the night and is extended at peak bloom. Entry is free. At the height of the season a cherry blossom shuttle bus links Takada Station and the park, and temporary parking opens, some of it paid or reservation-only. Traffic restrictions depend on the bloom. Inquiries go to the Joetsu Tourism Convention Association.
