About

The star turn of the Tsubame Cherry Blossom Festival is the Bunsui Oiran Dochu. Three oiran, Shinano-dayu, Sakura-dayu and Bunsui-dayu, in sumptuous costumes, lead about 60 attendants through Jizodo Honcho and beneath the cherry trees along the Okozu Bunsui channel. Those roughly 1,500 trees were planted in thanks for the channel works that protect the area from Shinano River floods. The procession is said to have started as a costume parade by local volunteers to entertain blossom viewers, and it came back after a wartime break.
