About
Around April 1, which Beppu has named its Hot Spring Appreciation Day, the whole spa city turns into a festival ground. On Mt. Ogiyama, the Ogiyama Fire Festival sends flames across the hillside, an event that grew out of the old practice of burning the slopes each spring. Portable shrines are carried through the shopping arcades, and on Station Avenue the Yu-bukkake Matsuri lets you get splashed with hot-spring water. The festival is said to go back to a big town sale dreamed up by Beppu merchants in 1910. Joined with the rites of the local hot-spring shrine, it moved to an April 1 start in the early Showa era and has carried its present name since 2001. Crowds come from all over Japan and overseas, making this a lively time to visit.
