About

For two days each autumn, the Onta pottery village in the hills of Hita becomes a busy market. All nine of the village's kilns lay out their wares and sell them in quantity. Most of the year the only sound is the thump of the karausu clay pounders, chosen as one of Japan's 100 best soundscapes, but during the festival the lanes fill with people looking for pots and bowls. Onta ware began in the mid-Edo period, and its techniques have passed from parent to a single heir for about 300 years. Free shuttle buses run from JR Hita Station, and temporary parking is set up.
