About

Every October 17 and 18, Shirahige Tawara Shrine in Kitsuki holds its grand festival. Parishioners brew doburoku, a cloudy unfiltered sake, and offer it to the gods in thanks for the harvest. The shrine is the only one in Kyushu with a license to brew, and the work starts with a ceremony on September 25, following time-honored steps. The rite is said to have continued for more than 1,300 years, since 710. These festival days are the only time in the year that visitors can taste the shrine's doburoku, and people travel from across Japan for it.
