About
One autumn evening each year, countless bamboo lanterns glow around Mamedamachi in Hita and along the banks of the Kagetsu River. Mamedamachi is a nationally designated preservation district of traditional buildings, and once the lights come on its old streets look completely different from the daytime, almost like a dream. It is a lovely way to explore a town often called a little Kyoto. Lanterns are placed in the Mameda and Maruyama districts and on the riverbank, and it is free to attend. 2026 marks its 22nd edition, with lanterns lit from about 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
