About
On autumn nights, about 20,000 bamboo lanterns light up the old castle town of Taketa. After sunset the streets glow softly, and you can wander through a dreamlike scene. The lanterns are made from bamboo cleared to care for the surrounding countryside, and the whole town takes part with an eye on the satoyama landscape a hundred years from now. The 2026 festival, its 27th edition, runs for three days. Roads in the venue are closed, shuttle buses run from designated parking lots to JR Bungo-Taketa Station, and extra trains head toward Oita.
