About
On the second Sunday of February, Mori Shrine in Takaya, Kibichuo, reads the coming year's harvest. Rice and pieces of slender medake bamboo are boiled together in a pot, and the amount of porridge that ends up inside each bamboo tube tells whether the crops will be good or poor. The rite is said to have begun during the Great Tenmei Famine, when farmers struggling with failed harvests turned to divination as their last hope, and it has reportedly continued for more than 200 years. By car, the shrine is about 30 minutes from the Kayo interchange on the Okayama Expressway.
