About
On the third Sunday of April, Tanjoji Temple in Kumenan holds a service that welcomes the parents of Honen Shonin into the Pure Land. The main hall plays the part of paradise, and the Shaba-do, a hall of six Jizo statues about 300 meters before the temple gate, stands for this world; the twenty-five bodhisattvas come in procession and lead Honen's parents to the Pure Land in a solemn performance. It is counted among Japan's three great nerikuyo processions and is said to have begun in the Muromachi period. Jodo sect followers and others come from across Japan to pray for healing and a peaceful passing.
