About
On November 3 each year, Yuga Jinja Hongu Shrine in Kurashiki's Kojima district holds its one fire festival of the year. It brings together the sacred flames of the two shrines of the old "Yuga and Konpira double pilgrimage": a large goma altar is lit, and wooden sticks inscribed with wishes are tossed in. The big moment is the fire-walking rite, when participants walk barefoot over smoldering embers to pray for good health. Kojima Yuga taiko drumming starts around midday, a great goma fire prayer with a hot-water purification follows, and the fire-walk takes place in the afternoon. Anyone can join the fire-walk as well as watch it.
