About

Held in Naha's Tsuji district on the twentieth day of the lunar New Year, the closing day of the New Year season, this festival asks for good harvests and thriving business. Tsuji was a pleasure quarter where social life and the performing arts flourished from the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and the festival is said to have begun with its women, known as juri, dancing with horse-shaped ornaments at their waists. In front of the Tsuji Shinshikai prayer site, the juri-uma dance is joined by a sacred procession, Ryukyuan dance, and performances by local groups including hatagashira banners and eisa drumming. The festival stopped after 1988 but was brought back in 2000 and has continued since.
