About

Shurijo Castle Park's big autumn festival is a window onto the history and culture of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It was known as the Shurijo Festival until the 2021 season, when it took its current name. Day one brings the Ryukyu Dynasty Picture Scroll Parade to Kokusai-dori, with the king and queen and the envoys of the Chinese emperor among the vividly costumed marchers. On day two the king and queen make their appearance, and on the last day a classical procession recreating the king's visits to three temples moves through Shuri. Children perform the gate-opening ceremony during the festival, and visitors can ring the Bankoku Shinryo bell.
