About

Shugo-sai is the autumn thanksgiving for the harvest at Hiraoka Shrine, celebrated by the local parish communities. Since 2024 it has followed a new pattern: pre-festival days on the Saturday and Sunday just before Sports Day, and the formal Shugo-sai ceremony on October 15. On Saturday afternoon the pre-festival begins, and taikodai drum floats from the parish neighborhoods enter the shrine one after another, hoisted and carried into the evening. On Sunday, the Shinkosai rite is followed by a portable shrine procession joined by children in costume, and more floats come in. Timings for the floats differ by neighborhood, so check the notices from each residents' association.
