About
Every October, the Sakai Festival is the biggest event on the city's calendar. Its spine is Oshoji-suji, the east-west avenue between Sakai-higashi and Sakai stations, and venues extend to the City Hall area, Daido-suji, the Uchikawa riverside, the Sakai Plaza of Rikyu and Akiko, and Nanshuji Temple. Top attractions are a historical gun corps demonstration, teams shouldering huge futon-daiko drum floats, and the Sakai Grand Tea Gathering in the hometown of Sen no Rikyu, plus stage shows, food and hands-on activities that show off the city's history. It started in 1974, 2026 is its 53rd edition, and the previous one drew around 400,000 visits in total. It is organized by the city's tourism and convention association.
