About

With Mt. Buko (1,304 m), seen as the symbol of Chichibu, rising behind it, the Shibazakura Hill in Hitsujiyama Park is carpeted in moss phlox each spring. Pink, white, purple and other varieties are planted in separate blocks, so the slope reads like a patchwork of flowers. The planted area and number of plants grow every year; there are now more than 400,000 plants of 10 varieties across about 17,600 square meters. Peak color usually runs from mid-April into the early-May holidays, but the weather can shift that. During the festival a Chichibu specialty market sets up on the hill, and events are held in town, mostly on public holidays. On some days the park charges admission.
