About
In cherry blossom season, the Gongendo embankment in Satte hosts this festival. About 1,000 Somei-Yoshino trees run along the roughly 1 km bank, forming a tunnel of flowers, while rapeseed blooms bright yellow across the field right next to it; the pairing of pale pink and yellow is the highlight. Some 100 stalls and a local products shop open during the festival, and anyone buying from the stalls can use a free picnic area. At dusk, paper lanterns are lit for night-time viewing. The embankment is said to have been built around 1576 and was long prized for protecting Edo from repeated floods. Today a local preservation society tends its cherry trees and flowers.
