About
Each autumn, central Hanno fills with locals and visitors for this festival, which pairs traditional float processions, stationary festival music and lion dances with a citizens' parade, yosakoi dancing and food stalls. Floats come from 11 neighborhoods in two styles: Edo-style floats crowned with figures, and pavilion-style yatai with curved gabled roofs and fine carvings. Be sure to catch the moment all 11 line up together and the face-offs between floats. Neighborhoods began pulling floats and offering festival music in the mid-Meiji era, and in 1971 the tourism association, chamber of commerce, shopping streets and residents' associations teamed up to hold the first Hanno Festival.
