About
Ranzan Gorge, one of Saitama's best-known scenic spots, is known for the clear Tsuki River, its flat rock shelves and the woods around them, and this festival is timed to the peak of the autumn leaves. It is based at the Ranzan Gorge Barbecue Area, where food trucks and tent stalls appear on event days. Around the peak, you can walk the gorge-side paths and watch red and yellow leaves mirrored in the river. The gorge owes its name to the forestry scholar Honda Seiroku, who visited in the autumn of 1928 and, finding the mix of gorge, foliage and red pines just like Arashiyama in Kyoto, called it the Arashiyama of Musashi Province. The poet Yosano Akiko came in 1939 and wrote verses about the valley's scenery.
