About
From February 17 to 19, Tamura Shrine in Tsuchiyama, Koka, holds a festival for protection against misfortune, and crowds come to pray for the power of its lucky bow and arrows. One thing to look for is Kanigasaka-ame, a candy sold during the festival. The story behind it: a crab monster in the Suzuka mountains used to devour travelers, until Eshin Sozu of Mt. Hiei chanted the Ojoyoshu and its shell broke into eight pieces. He showed the villagers how to make candy in the shape of the broken shell and told them that eating it would keep disaster away. The shrine itself was founded in the early Heian period, and the festival is tied to the tale of Sakanoue no Tamuramaro defeating a demon at Suzuka Pass. Buses from Kibukawa Station on the JR Kusatsu Line take about 30 minutes.
