About

On Setsubun, Taga Taisha showers the crowd with lucky beans and rice cakes. The throwers are men and women turning 60 who come from Shiga and beyond, the men taking the special stage in red hoods and hakama. There are two sessions: a rite in the main hall at 10:30 followed by throwing at 11:00, and a rite at 13:30 followed by throwing at 14:00. First, the Inbara Kagura troupe, an intangible cultural property of Shimane Prefecture, performs its "Demon Dance," well worth seeing. Setsubun marks the turn of the seasons, and the ritual is held as tsuina, driving out evil and inviting good fortune. The shrine is about a 10-minute walk from Taga-Taisha-mae Station on the Ohmi Railway.
