About

On November 7 each year, after the sacred procession, Yurai Hachimangu Shrine in Tonbara, Iinan, holds this harvest-thanksgiving rite in its worship hall. A priest dressed as a shrine maiden dances with a bamboo staff, tracing the course of rice from unhulled grain to ears, polished rice and rice cakes. The moment when ears of rice are hung on the staff is said to show the god of the rice fields appearing as in ancient times, and because so few rites like this survive anywhere in Japan, it attracts attention. A shrine maiden used to perform the role. The rite is said to owe much to Tabe Shrine, enshrined alongside the main deity. It is one of four festival rites organized by rotating household hosts, designated together as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Shimane Prefecture in 1994.
