About
On November 3 every year, Masuda Tenmangu, the shrine of Sugawara no Michizane, holds the biggest annual event in the Masuda district. Its core is a procession tracing Michizane's journey into exile at Dazaifu: mounted senior and junior officials, cattle and horses, and comic niwaka skits move through the streets. Children dressed as feudal footmen and rice-planting musicians add color, while Iwami kagura and other entertainment fill the main stage and the shrine grounds. The central streets are closed to cars for the day, with stalls set up along them. The officials' procession is said to have been brought from a Tenmangu shrine in Suo in the Meiji era, giving it about 130 years of history. Every 25 years a special grand festival is held.
