About
On September 1 every year, Takatsu Kakinomoto Shrine in Masuda holds its Hassaku Festival. A yabusame (horseback archery) ritual in the traditional manner takes place on the bank of the Takatsu River near the shrine, and Iwami Kagura is offered to the deity. Stalls line the approach from Takatsuno Bridge to the shrine, which gets very busy. The festival marks the birthday of the great poet Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, traditionally placed on the first day of the eighth lunar month; since that date also falls on a day of the farming calendar feared for storms, it has long served to pray for protection from wind and for a good harvest. The yabusame is said to have begun as an offering by Kamei Koremasa in 1661.
