About
On September 1, Dangyo Shrine in the hills of Naku, Okinoshima, holds its annual festival, with ushitsuki, bulls locking horns, as the entertainment. Bull sumo here is said to have been started by villagers to comfort the exiled Emperor Go-Toba, and it remains a yearly event islanders look forward to. Reaching the shrine means a climb of a little over 50 minutes from Kaminaku along the Naku River; beyond the gate the shrine stands midway up a rock face like a folding screen, between two waterfalls about 40 meters high. Hassaku is the first day of the eighth lunar month, and since the switch to the solar calendar the festival has been held on September 1.
