About

On April 21 every year, the Renge-e Mai dances are offered on a special stage in front of the main hall of Oki Kokubunji Temple in Ikeda, Okinoshima. Thought to have come down from the Heian period, they were designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 1977. The day is the memorial for Kobo Daishi, observed one month after his death anniversary. It is a once-a-year chance to watch old dances kept alive on a remote island, in the temple grounds. The temple is regarded as the site where Emperor Go-Daigo stayed in exile, and related materials are shown in the Renge-e hall on the grounds. It is about 10 minutes by car from Saigo Port, with free parking. Inquiries go to the Okinoshima Town commerce and tourism section.
