About
On the first Sunday of April every year, Tsuwano celebrates spring with horseback archery on the yabusame course of Washibara Hachimangu Shrine. The 250-meter track has three targets. Three archers ride in Kamakura-period hunting dress, and in a typical year 12 more gallop past in lighter dress. The morning session begins around 10:00 and the afternoon session around 13:30. Watching is free, and paid reserved seats are available. The course, a Shimane Prefecture historic site, is said to have been laid out in the Muromachi period by the lord Yoshimi Masayori when he built the shrine, and was once praised as the finest in Japan for keeping its ancient form. Practiced in the Ogasawara style, the ritual thrived in the Edo period, lapsed after the Meiji era and was revived by local people in the Showa era.
