About
The plum festival at Atami Baien is run by Atami City and the Atami City Tourism Association in a garden opened in 1886 and known for Japan's earliest-blooming plums. Its 469 trees span 60 varieties, a few of them over 100 years old. Because each variety flowers at its own pace, the bloom passes from early to mid-season to late trees, so the season stays long. Some days bring Atami geisha performances, street entertainers or singing shows, and on certain days amazake is handed out for free. You can also rest your feet in a footbath and browse souvenir stalls inside the garden. Daytime admission is charged, and the trees are not lit up at night. Nearby roads and parking lots fill up daily, so take a JR train; Kinomiya Station is about a 10-minute walk away.
