About
From winter into spring, Inatori Onsen on the Izu Peninsula celebrates hina no tsurushi kazari, its local tradition of hanging strings of small cloth figures on both sides of the tiered Doll Festival display. No one knows exactly when it began, but it is thought to go back to around the late Edo period. The story goes that families who could not afford costly hina dolls relied on mothers, grandmothers and neighbors, who pooled scraps of old kimono and stitched flowers, rabbits, peaches, purses and more, each one a wish for a daughter's health and happiness. While the festival runs, Bunka Koen Hina no Yakata and other venues put the ornaments on show, and at Susanoo Shrine dolls and hangings cover the long flight of stone steps up to the main hall. Several shops in town let you try making an ornament yourself.
