About

Over a weekend in early summer, Yoshiwara in Fuji City stages its foremost traditional festival, a joint effort of 25 neighborhoods and 6 shrines. Its origins are traced to the Heian-period Gion Goryo-e, rites meant to banish evil spirits and disease. Up to 21 floats are hauled around town, and after dark they meet at several points along the street to perform against each other. There is plenty more: a procession with kiyari work songs, acrobatics on top of ladders, a portable shrine carried by women, and shrine drum contests. On day two, portable shrines from all 6 shrines come out, and at an intersection they collide in a "fighting" mikoshi clash; children and young people shouldering the shrines add to the energy. Yoshiwara Honcho-dori is closed to traffic and lined with food stalls. Use public transport, which runs extra services.
