About

In the rainy season, Shimoda Park, set on a hill above the town and harbor, holds its hydrangea festival. Around three million blooms cover the grounds, promoted as the largest hydrangea colony in Japan. More than a hundred named varieties, oakleaf, Uzu and Annabelle among them, appear along the walking paths in shifting shades of blue, purple, pink and white. While the festival runs, Kaikoku Square has stalls for local products, potted hydrangeas and food, and the Ajisai Chaya teahouse offers local flavors. The Shimoda Taiko preservation society also performs. With lots of slopes in the park, comfortable shoes are a must.
