About

When the cherry trees blossom around Oku-Hamanako, a princess's procession in period costume marks the start of spring. It recalls the Himekaido, a side road of the Tokaido said to have been used by Joen-in, mother of the eighth shogun Yoshimune, and by Atsuhime. The event dates from 1952, when people of the former town of Kiga wanted a festival all residents could enjoy. Kiga was once a post town, and the procession leaves from the Kiga Checkpoint, rebuilt using Edo-period documents, then makes its stately way along the cherry-lined embankment of the Miyakoda River. In some years a children's princess procession and a market of local vegetables and handmade goods are held at the same time.
