About
In spring, Gyokoji Temple in the Ikeda district of Iwata draws visitors to the blooming of the Yuya no Nagafuji, a wisteria believed to be more than 850 years old. Legend says Lady Yuya, famed as the heroine of the Noh play "Yuya," planted it with her own hands at the end of the Heian period. The vine is a National Natural Monument, and other old vines in the grounds are natural monuments of Shizuoka Prefecture. Peak bloom typically falls in mid to late April, when long purple clusters hang down like a curtain. During that time a temporary parking area is set up on the Tenryu River bank to handle the crowds. By car, the temple is roughly 15 minutes from either the Hamamatsu or the Iwata interchange of the Tomei Expressway.
