About

Each spring, central Shizuoka, the old Sunpu where Tokugawa Ieyasu spent his years as retired shogun, holds a citizens' festival that began in 1957 in step with the grand festival of Shizuoka Sengen Shrine. The main draw is the Ogosho Hanami Gyoretsu, based on accounts of Ieyasu viewing cherry blossoms in Sunpu with his lords and bannermen: a richly costumed procession with the retired shogun at its center, followed by his consort, feudal lords and retainers, makes its way through blossoming streets. There is also the Sunpu Tojo Gyoretsu, in which participants dressed as townspeople of Sunpu carry offerings toward Sunpu Castle, plus the Yozakura Ranbu and events at Sunpu Castle Park and other venues, so you can roam the city from afternoon into the night.
