About

On the weekend just before a fixed date in the old lunar calendar, the Mitsuke district of Iwata holds the Mitsuke Tenjin Naked Festival, often called one of the most unusual festivals in Japan and designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. Men dressed only in skirts of new straw shove and surge through the streets of Mitsuke, and once inside the worship hall of Yanahime Shrine they perform the Oni Odori, or demon dance. Everything happens around the old post-town street of Mitsuke on the former Tokaido, reachable by bus from JR Iwata Station. Iwata City's yearly calendar of tourism events lists the dates.
