About

Shimada's festival gives thanks for the Shimada mage hairstyle and for Tora Gozen, the Shimada-born courtesan of Oiso who is credited with inventing it. It grew out of a thanksgiving held for her in 1933 and has carried on since. The main sights are the Shimada Mage Dochu, a dancing procession of young women whose hair is dressed in many versions of the mage, all in matching yukata, and a memorial service for hair at Udaji Temple. On the Kawagoshi Kaido street you can watch the dancers, be served tea, and see traditional Japanese hair being styled, while food trucks gather for a market. The Shimada Mage Festival preservation society runs the event, and a rain schedule is used when the weather turns.
