About
The fireworks on the Watarase River banks, held on the first Saturday of August, wrap up Ashikaga's summer festival. First staged in 1903, the show is rated among the best in Kanto for both the quality and the number of its shells, and people travel from all over the region to see it. Around 20,000 fireworks go up, built around star mines with rapid volleys of large shells, and a drone show has joined the lineup in recent years. For the finale, a 400-meter Grand Niagara cascade and a wide star mine light the sky together. The site is right in the middle of town, an easy walk from Ashikagashi Station on the Tobu Line or Ashikaga Station on the JR Ryomo Line. Before the big night, the chamber of commerce hosts an eve festival with a haunted house and fair stalls.
