About

Nikko celebrates summer by dancing to Nikko Waraku Odori, one of Tochigi's signature folk songs. It goes back to September 1913, when Emperor Taisho and Empress Teimei toured the Nikko copper refinery, predecessor of Furukawa Electric's Nikko Works. No emperor had visited a private company before, and the relieved workers are said to have spontaneously sung and danced at the party after the visit went off without a hitch. Once a way of rewarding employees, it is now a festive gathering that many residents join. The dancing takes place around Waraku Pond inside the works, where people young and old in yukata circle under illuminations. Fans that double as raffle tickets give entry to a big prize draw.
