About
Every June 28, Konjoin, also called Nasu Namikiri Fudoson, in Nasushiobara holds a fire festival to drive off misfortune and bring good luck. This Koyasan Shingon temple is known for the severe training of its mountain ascetics. The practice hall and fire altar are first purified with bow, arrows and sword, the fire is lit, and worshippers toss in prayer sticks they have rubbed over their bodies. Then come the ordeals: the head priest enters a cauldron of boiling water, and ascetics thread burning torches through the sleeves of their robes. Last is the fire walk across the ashes of the great altar in the middle of the grounds, which anyone may do barefoot while praying for good health. Protective charms available only on this day are handed out, along with yakushi tea made from medicinal herbs brewed over the temple's fire.
