About

Yunishigawa Onsen in Nikko, a hot-spring village with lingering legends of Heike clan survivors, devotes two days to its Heike heritage. The first evening is the eve festival: taiko drumming gives way to the Joro Dochu, in which courtesans in sumptuous costumes process slowly through the town after dark. The next day the action moves to Heike no Sato, with a Shinto rite and dance by Akama Shrine, the Joro shrine visit, and Satsuma biwa and taiko performances throughout the day. In 2026 the Heike picture-scroll procession was skipped, and food trucks set up at the venue. From Yunishigawa-Onsen Station on the Yagan Railway, the village is about 25 minutes by bus.
