About
In the mountain hot-spring village of Yunishigawa, home to legends of Heike fugitives, the entire town turns into a winter festival. The star is the Sawaguchi riverbank, filled with hundreds of mini kamakura snow huts; on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights during the festival each one holds a candle, and the riverbed glows. This night view was certified as a Japan Night View Heritage site in 2009. More mini kamakura shine at Heike no Sato (admission charged), a cluster of thatched old houses, lit every night of the festival along with the bamboo-lantern event Heike Akari. The snow park at Yunishigawa Mizu no Sato (admission charged) has a big snow slide. The roads are snowy too, so bring shoes with good grip and fit winter tires.
