About

On the first Sunday of April each year, Togo Shrine in the Kazami district of Shioya offers this kagura, a Tochigi Prefecture intangible cultural property, at its annual festival. Said to have come here in 1616, it ranks among the older daidai-kagura traditions in the prefecture. It belongs to the Kanda-style Iwato Kagura line and has 36 pieces, beginning with a ceremonial bow dance, built around the Iwato dance and ending with the dance of Daikoku. The peak is the opening of the Heavenly Rock Cave, a Kojiki myth staged as a powerful, large-scale drama without dialogue. There is also a comic Ebisu dance in which the god hooks a sea bream. Flute, drum and dance have all been passed down orally.
