About
Every winter, Nakamachi Ebisu Shrine in the Ikeda area of Miyoshi holds its Ebisu Festival. Ikeda lies close to the very center of Shikoku and has long been a crossroads where people and goods meet, becoming the commercial and cultural heart of western Tokushima. Visitors from inside and outside the city come to pray for good business, family safety and a thriving community. The morning starts with a solemn Shinto ceremony. Afterward the mood brightens, and fuku-musume luck maidens hand out lucky charms such as rakes and decorated bamboo branches. Anyone who receives a charm or makes an offering can draw in a lottery where every ticket wins a prize, and ginger tea is served to all. Rows of Ebisu lanterns around the shrine make a striking sight.
