About
When the ginkgo trees along the Koshu Kaido in Hachioji turn gold, residents put on a festival of their own making. The avenue runs about four kilometers along Route 20, from Oiwake-cho to the Takao Station entrance, with roughly 770 trees on both sides. Neighbors who have cared for the trees, students and many other locals plan and run the event, which doubles as a celebration of their affection for the city. Activities include Sekisho (checkpoint) Orienteering, a bazaar and a tourism and local products fair. The 2026 edition, the forty-seventh, commemorates the hundredth year of the Koshu Kaido ginkgo avenue.
