About
This is the annual festival of Otori Shrine in Asakusa, known affectionately as Otori-sama, which claims to be where the Tori-no-Ichi began. About 150 stalls in the grounds sell kumade, decorated lucky rakes, to crowds hoping for business success and family safety. The stylish way to buy one is to haggle, leave the amount you saved as a tip, and close the deal with a round of rhythmic clapping. Yatsugashira taro, a charm for getting ahead, and kiri-zansho rice-cake sweets are local favorites too. Shrine tradition says Yamato Takeru, returning from his eastern campaign, hung a rake on the pine in front of the shrine to celebrate victory; that day was a Day of the Rooster in November, so it became the festival day. Depending on the year there are two or three Rooster days, and each fair runs a full day from the first drum at midnight.
