About
The autumn festival on Mt. Takao in Hachioji is timed to the foliage, which usually peaks from mid-November to early December, coloring the mountain red and yellow from base to summit. It is the busiest time of year on the mountain. On the opening day, the head priest of Takaosan Yakuoin performs a saito goma fire ritual in the plaza in front of Kiyotaki Station, praying for hikers' safety. During the festival, shoppers at Takaosan shopping association stores get a chance at a special lottery, there is a photo-posting campaign, and university students from the city give concerts and performances. Related events include illuminations of the autumn leaves along the cable car line. Weekends and holidays are crowded, so visitors are encouraged to come on other days or at quieter times.
