About
Tokyo Yosakoi, centered on Ikebukuro, is among the biggest yosakoi festivals in Kanto, with about 110 teams and some 5,000 dancers from all over Japan filling the streets with their own choreography, costumes and music. Its urban character comes from mixing teams in the tradition of Kochi's original yosakoi with teams in the style of Sapporo's YOSAKOI Soran Festival. It started in 2000 as one event within Toshima City's Fukuro Matsuri and now takes place in October as that festival's second part, the dance festival. On the main day there are nagashi routes where teams dance as they move and stage venues, all close enough in Ikebukuro to walk between. It ends with an awards ceremony on Azalea-dori and a mass dance open to spectators.
