About
Kameido Tenjin Shrine in Koto City has a reputation as Tokyo's top wisteria spot, and a festival is held while the vines are in flower. Over 50 wisteria plants grow in the grounds and usually begin blooming around mid-April. Purple clusters drooping from the trellises are reflected in the Shinji-ike pond, and a faint, sweet scent hangs in the air. The wisteria has drawn admirers since the Edo period and features in Utagawa Hiroshige's "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo." During the festival the grounds are illuminated from sunset to 9 p.m., and the lit blossoms shimmer on the water for a calm view quite unlike the daytime. Peak bloom can vary a great deal from year to year.
