About
Every January 12, Ome holds a daruma market as a winter tradition. For the day, the old Ome Kaido near Ome Station becomes a pedestrian zone, with stall after stall of daruma along the road, busy with locals and visitors from farther away. Its origins are traced to Ome's first market, believed to date from the fifteenth or sixteenth century, where cocoon charms were sold to promote the area's silk farming. In the late Edo period, lucky daruma replaced the cocoons.
